Diego Rivera: Talent Meets Message

Was searching on the internet for artists who find a balance between creating beautiful art and communicating a specific message. I came across this piece by Mexican painter Diego Rivera. I read a biography on him a few years ago and I appreciated how he and his art became more socially conscious as he grew older.

This piece is titled: A History of Medicine (click the pic to see a bigger view)

What do you think?

Hmm, never sure what to make of the visual arts. I'm less in tune with that and far less knowledgeable.

But from first impressions, I'd gather there was something Rivera was trying to convey about the modern world and the old Native world; the divide between classes.

I hear you. My art knowledge is rather limited. But I started reading about artists like Diego a couple years ago. I was intrigued by the creative process of a lot of visual artists: how some would be quite reclusive. It's really similar to how I've been creating of late. I realized that theirs a lot of similarity between various creative types. So studying them has helped me to understand myself better.

Very true; I think you can always learn from studhying the habits of others--how they create, what they go thru to give shape and form to just an idea that lingers inside their minds.

Speaking of being a recluse, one of my fave artists (Paul Westerberg) said that the songwriting process is a little sad for him:

"Q: What's the feeling you have when you've got a good one?

A: It's a great feeling. And it's almost sad, too, because it
flashes through your mind that the greatest moments of your life
will almost always be spent alone. Playing live with the guys is
great, but it's not like writing by yourself when there's no one
around. For that hour or two you feel like you've got a purpose
and a place in life. You think you're hot shit and pat yourself
on the back, and then that fades. "
